Caring for a Parent

How Do I Know When My Parent Might Need Help at Home?

The signs that a parent may benefit from a little support at home are often small and easy to miss. Here is what families often notice first.

Families rarely wake up one morning and decide that a parent needs care. It usually begins with small observations.

Changes around the home Post piling up, a fridge with out-of-date food, laundry left undone or a home that is less tidy than it used to be can all suggest that day-to-day tasks are becoming harder.

Changes in routine Missed appointments, meals being skipped, or medication being forgotten are common early signs.

Changes in confidence Some people stop going out, become more anxious about stairs or bathing, or start avoiding activities they used to enjoy.

Starting the conversation You do not need to have all the answers before you speak to someone. A short, honest conversation about what is becoming difficult is often the best starting point, and a small amount of support early on can help someone stay independent for far longer.

If you are unsure, our friendly team can talk it through with you and explain the options.
